In the morning, Sawyer’s injury wasn’t causing him near as much pain as the night before. Pepper took that as a good sign and assisted him in changing his bandage.

“You are very good at looking after a fellow,” he praised with an appreciative light in his eye once she rolled his pants leg back into place. “I’m beginning to think it’s gonna come in handy to have you around, Pepper.”

Her heart skipped a beat at the way he was looking at her. She wanted so badly to reach up and caress his face but did not dare. Their marriage was merely one of convenience. She’d made that clear enough, and he didn’t seem the least interested in making any changes to their arrangement.

“It’s my duty, now,” she declared primly.

“Your duty, eh? Not because you might require my manly assistance on your little treasure hunt?” He pretended to flex his arms for her benefit.

“There’s that, too,” she snickered.

She’d expected to secure their passage north in a regular train car full of passengers. However, she returned from a trip to the train station privy to discover Sawyer had somehow secured them a private car, a rather luxurious one, at that.

“How?” she asked suspiciously.

“You aren’t the only one with a little nest egg of funds,” he retorted, ushering her inside their private car with a princely flourish. “Consider it a wedding gift, my lovely Pepper. Let’s travel in style to Salt Lake City, shall we?” He looked and sounded more like a gentleman of leisure in his sleek black travel suit than the former bank robber that she knew him to be.

Filled with misgivings about how her new husband might have come into enough funds to rent a whole train car, Pepper followed him in silence. Once inside the train car, she caught her breath. It was the most luxurious set of accommodations she’d ever experienced firsthand.

It was configured like a small home away from home. There was a kitchen on one end of the car with a cozy dining nook, a living area with an oversized sofa in the center of the car, plus a bedroom on the opposite end. A pair of attendants was never far away, and it seemed to her that Sawyer rang for them far more often than necessary. It was as if he was showing off, trying to impress her.

He ordered one sumptuous meal after another, had her gown laundered and pressed, and even had a copy of the newspaper delivered.

By the second morning, Pepper was about to expire of curiosity. “Have you come into some money that I’m not aware of, Sawyer McCarty?”

He was lounging on the sofa and spared her a grin over the top of his newspaper. “As a matter of fact, yes, I did.”

“Dare I inquire about its source?” She leaned her elbows on the small table for two where she was sipping at a cup of cinnamon tea.

His smile slipped. “Seeing as how we’re married and all, I reckon you have a right to know.
